very small vase – white and vanilla 2

this elegant little number  (8.5 cm x 5 cm at the base) is made from white stripes on a vanilla base which then react when subjected to intense heat to produce this luxurious caramel colour. The epitome of calm all in a little bud vase

these little vases started life as a flat blank of white and vanilla glass. The two in their raw state are virtually indistinguishable from each other but a bit of heat and this is the result. The caramel tones are from white on vanilla and the white and grey from vanilla on white. It’s all about metals and reactions. Please don’t ask me more – I haven’t a clue! but oh so pleasing is the result. The delicate line where the two colours meet is a joy to behold.

The vases start life as a thick blank of glass and they are then slumped through a doughnut of bisque clay dropping to the floor of the kiln and depending on where I stop it depends on how broad the base is and how much of a ‘fold’ occurs.  The dropping takes about three hours and you can see in the photos below what that looks like as I check on it’s progress camera in hand. A hand that is very thickly covered in special gloves that the heat doesn’t penetrate and glasses that deflect the intense heat and light from the kiln. It’s not a look I’d allow for public viewing but we glass artists sacrifice a lot for our passions!
